Chetumal City

Bay,river and borderline

Lagoon and mangrove

Chactemal Capital city

The color of the rosewood

Heart crossed by heroes

Pierce bye sea Boulevar afternoons

Endings in a obelisk

It has lost its ancient fear of the wind

That sets free tempest

Everyone treasures the staves

An orderly reminder

Of a Caribbean village

Door, still and window

I search for your name on every wall

In every corner

Today, I knew at a glance

That you were once

Named payo Obispo
Arcila, I. G., (1997). Quintana Roo: Window on Paradise, Hong Kong, p. 37
We chose this poem because we think that this poem describes how Chetumal City was and how it has grown up through the years. Also, it talks about its main places when Chetumal was called Payo Obispo; then, it changed by “Chactemal” which means “Lugar Del Madero Rojo”

This beautiful poem was inspired in its people that started to built up this city for many years and people who died when hurricanes came and destroyed the city. Also, the writer expresses his proud of the ancient “Chactemal” that nowadays it continues the battle with hurricanes… :)

How is Chetumal like?

Chetumal is a city which is the capital of the state of Quintana Roo. In past times, it was called "Payo Obispo", but in 1936 the name was officially Chetumal or Chactemal that means "Lugar del Madero Rojo", in Maya language. This city is well-known because of its bay that is near of the "Rio Hondo" and also is a border between Mexico and Belize. Currently, many places have been built in Chetumal and it is going to be little by little a modern city.

Nowadays, Chetumal is a place that provides so much to its population and visitors. It is a small city but you can find many things to do at nights for instance people use to go to the Plaza de las Americas mall, museums, a zoo, archeological zones, supermarkets, parks, theather, nice restaurants, antros, hotels, casinos and so on.

The most woderful thing is that you can have tranquility and peace when you are enjoying the freshing breeze of the nights!! :)

Chetumal is a wondeful place to visit

Chetumal is located between the east and south of the Mexican republic. It is one of the youngest cities of Mexico, so Chetumal is a small place that has grown up through the years. Some characteristics of its climate is that it is a humid, warm and raining place. Also, most of the time when December comes every year the climate is not too cold, you can enjoy its typical weather.

I was born in Chetumal and I have lived here for many years ago. My parents have told me how Chetumal has changed since they came from Yucatan. I remember something special and sad about the history of this place is that Chetumal have suffered some damaged by the hurricanes; for example, two of the most terrible hurricanes, Janet and Carmen. People from here always remember those days because a lot of their families die, even so, Chetumal has risen up in some areas like factories, malls, education, infrastructure, the growing and better hospitals services, and so on.

I like this city because there is not a lot of pollution. I love my town; it has amazing places like lagoons, archaeological sites, and nice spaces to go at night. It is important to mention that most of people from here spend their time in all those spaces. People from Chetumal are really friendly and nice. I think that this city is astonishing to live and rest in holidays.

Monuments

PLAZA DEL RENACIMIENTO
This square is interesting because it has a statue which represents the renaissance of Chetumal after the pass of the hurricane “Janet”. This statue is very important for people from here because it is part of the history of Chetumal. On the other hand, it is a good place in order to skate on weekends. It is my favorite place to do that.

MONUMENTO A LA BANDERA
That monument is located in "la explanada del palacio de govierno", next to The Bay of Chetumal. It was constructed in February 24, 1943 and it was the first monument here. It has a white obelisk with a clock, and it is between two golden eagles, too. This esplanade is ideal to ride bicycle and have a good time with your family. Also, people use to go there in order to dance because some groups arrive.

MONUMENTO AL PESCADOR
It is a statue with a fountain, which is located into the Bay of Chetumal. It represents a way to remember that in Chetumal were fishermen. It has a form of a fisherman in the moment of picking up his mesh. I think this monument is really beautiful.
I like to go to Monumento al Pescador because there I can have peace and quite in order to think many things about my life. Also, I can talk with my best friend without someone who interrupts us. Furthermore, I think it is an ideal place in order to read a book, because as there is not noise you can concentrate reading.

LA FUENTE DEL MANATI
This monument was constructed so that people around the world know that Bay of Chetumal is a sacred refuge to manatees. This fountain is really interesting and original, and it is a representation of those beautiful marine animals

International center of convention and business

The government of Chetumal recently has built up this place in order to develop the economy of the city. It is a place where the government will organize a lot of events in order to increase the economy of the town through the investment of people from other cities or countries. Also, it is going to use for high schools and UQROO University in order to organize different event that are going to improve educational life in this city.

The opening ceremony was approximately one month ago. The UQROO organized an event where the main guest was Rigoberta Menchu Tun who won the Nobel Prize of the Peace. She gave some conferences about indigenous people, so she opened ceremony with this activity.

In my view point, I think it is an important investment to the city because it will develop the economy of the city in order to increase in some areas of the state. Also, I believe that Chetumal little by little has grown up in order to modernize to the future. I am very proud of living here in Chetumal.

Downtown or the mall?

Two Places where People Spend their Time

Nowadays, Chetumal has grown up in some areas like business, for example, a lot of companies have come from different places in order to invest here as supermarkets, malls, fast food companies and so on. These locals are set on “Plaza las Americas”, where you can find all kind of stores; also, it is one of the most important places where people spend their time because they can find a lot of entertainment for their children. Likewise, young people prefer to go to this place and enjoy having fun when they go shopping.
On the other hand, some people avoid going to this places because they prefer to go to the downtown where they can find a lot of clothe stores and different department stores with reasonable prices, banks and so on, the working population. I think that Heroes Avenue is the most important place for people from here because this avenue is part of the history of Chetumal. It is the First Avenue that population from here did when they started to build up this city, so it is a place where first population is set.
As I mentioned before, they are two of the most representative places form Chetumal maybe because the working population are found here, so Chetumal has its activities and economy in these spaces, of course, it is important to mention that this city has another places, but those are two of the principal that people prefer.

Bay Boulevard and The Esplanade of the Flag

Bay Boulevard has an extension of 9.5 kilometers and starts since the monument of renaissances until the town of Calderitas. I think this is the most popular place for chetumaleños because it is a place where you can have good time with your friends. Also, you can take a walk, do exercise, and run and so on. Furthermore, when you pass there, you can find some touristic services such as bars, discos, restaurants, hotels, fast food, karaoke, monuments and so on.

On the other hand, we have “The Esplanade of the Flag”. In this place, you can find other kind of entertainment. For example, people use to dance in this space on weekends, because some musical groups come here. Also, some people take their children in order to spend time with them. Sometimes some mechanics games arrive here.

Restaurants

When people go to a new place, one of the most important things is to choose a good restaurant where the servicio is very excellent, delicious food, kind waiters and also people like to eat in a very good situated place.
There are many restaurants with a reasonable prices here in Chetumal. Many of them are opened only at nights so you can go out for dinners. Generally, the restaurants that are in front of the bay, are places where you can drink and have snaks enjoying the music.
On the otherhand, there are many others restaurant situated in the downtown or they are spread into all city.

One of the most wonderful things is that visitors will enjoy of the tranquility of watching the starts and the sky of Chetumal. And if you decide going out in a restaurant near of the bay, you will enjoy watching the beautiful boulevard and the people that go there for a drive or for a walk with their families.

Antros

Chetumal has many different antros. They are places where a lot of people go in order to have a great time. Antros are opened around 10:00 p.m until 5:00 a.m!!

People use to go there on weekends; therefore, the city gets a spurt of energy at nights. you can see these places very crowded and full of fun. There are options that you can choose when you are deciding what place yo want to go. For people that like to dance mexican music, can go to "Tropibanda" where you will see people dancing the famous "pasito duranguense", salsa o merengue.
"Bahia" offers a good service and you will listen to 80's music, the environment is very fun, and the place is sapcious.
On the other hand, there are people who decide to go to "Skybar", it's an antro where you can listen to electronic music.

My friends and I prefer to go to "Rock Shot's Cafe", because is one of my favorites antros. It offers variety of music, apart of its good service. There you can dance many kinds of music such as salsa, banda, electronic, pop, disco reegaetton music and so on. Also, it gives of a dance presentacion with costumed characteres. The price is good and the waiterss are friendly.
